It’s easy to get plantains and bananas mixed up. While plantains are part of the banana family and the two look alike, plantains are not sweet, and instead are used mostly as a starchy vegetable. These gummy snacks are billed as being anti-inflammatory and use a host of ingredients that have been shown to help curb inflammation in the body, namely turmeric and ginger. The way they’ve made these into gummy form is through the use of gelatin, which is definitely a go on Paleo. There’s also other healthy items to really make these a vitamin-packed snack, including citrus juice of your choice and raw honey. By using natural ingredients like raw honey you’re eating food that is as close to nature as possible.
The coconut flour and the bit of coconut oil you use to fry up these babies won’t give you an overwhelming flavor of coconut – the coconut flavor is so mild that you probably wouldn’t notice it if you didn’t know. But since you do know, you might pick up a hint of that. But of course, the little bit of coconut flavor goes spectacularly well with the flavors of banana and cinnamon.
With this crock pot recipe you can create a cashew chicken dish that will rival anything that you can buy from your local Chinese restaurant. The great thing is that because it is using the slow cooker it is going to be a really easy as far as preparation goes. These sweet and sour gummy candies are actually good for you. Pretty weird huh? They are really easy and actually a lot of fun to make. All you do is mix the ingredients, put them into a mold either by pouring or using a plastic bag with a small hole in the corner. Then either put them in the refrigerator or freezer to set depending on how big of a hurry you’re in. You could make them any shape or color you’d like. Tacos can be tricky to make Paleo, but they’ve figured out a good way here by using portobello mushroom caps for the shells. Made them today, with a few changes. I used about 1/2 cup pumpkin for the bananas, added a little maple syrup, vanilla extract, and pumpkin pie spice. Used my ebelskiver pan (love that thing) and put some apple butter in the middle of some of them. YUM! And yes, it’s 80 degrees out here, but pumpkin is my weakness. You don’t have to subject yourself to the Orange Chicken made by a fast food place anymore, you can stay on the Paleo path and still have a delicious orange chicken when you get the notion. that’s because it gets its sweetness from honey, and its orange flavor from oranges, so nothing artificial goes into it. The use of ginger, chili sauce, and garlic means you’ll still be getting the classic taste, but this method gives you control over the quality of ingredients you’re using, especially the chicken, which you can use organic free range chicken.
This chipotle-infused dip is going to be spicy, but not so spicy that your eyes water. It’s balanced out by the butternut squash, which has a nice calming effect on the taste buds. Any time I see a grain-free recipe for pancakes that says “like REAL pancakes” I always hope “Yes, maybe this is THE ONE!” But like all the others, it’s not. Comments on here saying that there was a strong baking soda taste were correct. I even added in chocolate chips to cover it a bit (still there!) and followed some tips I saw in the comments–I mixed the dry ingredients together then ran them through a mesh strainer (twice!) to make sure everything was well incorporated, added a bit of vanilla and cinnamon, like I used to with regular pancakes, and folded the egg whites at the end to keep the pancakes fluff(ier). I will give them that: they stayed thick, and folding in the egg whites did help most of them from getting too dense (but never fluffy like a real pancake). Then again, mine definitely didn’t come out like the video batter–it was closer to a cookie dough consistency.
These are wicked amazing!! I made them the first time, as is, just cut the recipe down to 1/3 so it made 3 small pancakes for just me. As is they were great – really filling (I could hardly finish them all and that’s a rarity for me and pancakes) – but a bit too sweet! I followed the ingredients to a T so I was surprised by the sweetness. I made them this morning but with chunky, organic Peanut Butter instead and added 1/4 tsp salt (because I think pancakes should be a hint salty), 1/4 tsp vanilla and 1 tsp chopped walnuts. I have 9 Paleo snack recipes when you’re on the go so you can stay on track with minimal effort. These are good ideas for work, snacks at home, children’s snacks, and vacations. Sometimes eating on the Paleo diet can be kind of hard. Especially when you are traveling or always on the go. And extra EXTRA hard if you are traveling with kids AND doing the paleo diet. Whew! I’m tired just thinking of it.
Leftover chicken or turkey breast, pork chop, burger, or any meat with avocado/guacamole/guacachoke* smeared on top. You can just roast a pound or two of any kind of meat in the oven for 13 minutes or so and then have all that meat for snacks and meals for the week. Sometimes we make 3-pound hams in our smoker, slice it up, put it in a glass container and then I can just grab a piece of ham when I want it. Any meat will do!
Thank you for posting this! I have been practicing the paleo diet on and off for a few months and getting little cravings in between is hard because I know I can’t eat junk. This saves a lot of time and energy and I feel better knowing there are fun and easy paleo snacks to make without breaking your diet! For a heartier cake, it’s best to mix a few different flours. This recipe uses almond, coconut, and tapioca flour, and also insists that eggs be at room temperature so the ingredients bind easily and cook perfectly (i.e. not too fast, which can cause them to burn). Berries can be a little tricky in this lightened-up batter, so we say skip 'em and stick to the compote.
Absolutely amazing! I love your recipes and this one will definitely be a staple for a family weekend breakfast. I have made this recipe using tapioca flour and today, with arrowroot flower. My preference is arrowroot flower. Tapioca flour has it’s place in some recipes but it can lead to a gummy texture, mainly in the middle of whatever it is I’m making. Arrowroot flour made these taste just like the real thing. My husband, who would put extra gluten on food (his running joke) was convinced these were the real thing. I think I’ll start using arrowroot flour for all of my recipes that call for tapioca. Ashley, do they always interchange so well?
