Maybe the life span of Cro magnon was so short because of poor diet and extreme physical labor. Has anyone seen long term proof of such a basic intake? Don’t misunderstand me, I think the chemistry we’ve developed and added to our foods can’t be good but, I can’t help wonder if finding a balance in what we eat is better than eliminating foods that we can process and use. Broken down to a basic form of existence, all life has the same properties of nutrition and survival of the species. Whether it’s milk from a coconut or milk from a goat, it has the same purpose, just a different presentation. I think this diet is a good start to eating less processed foods, which to me seems more important than eliminating milk from a different animal than ourselves. Maybe the unnatural way we produce milk from cows has more to do with lactose intolerance than the essence of that product. Maybe genetic modifications of grains have led to gluten intolerance. The life span of humans has certainly increased. Maybe not treating our food with growth enhancement or pesticides would be the answer to allowing us to consume some foods that are emerging as not inherently good for us. Just a few ideas to ponder. So I didn’t have almond flour and thought I could substitute 1/2 c coconut flour & 1/2 c of tapioca flour. Needless to say I couldnt even roll them into balls. The dough would not stay together. So I added an egg and about a tbsp more almond milk. The dough finally looked normal, but after pressing onto a cookie sheet and baked for 10 minutes, I took them out and they dry and tasteless.
I’m sure primitive man ate some grains and legumes but likely in much lower quantities than anyone does today. Many raw legumes are toxic so they were probably avoided until agriculture/cooking began. Fruit is an evolutionary co-adaptation between flowering and fruit bearing plants and the animals that disperse the seeds. The fruit is delicious and nutritious (but only when ripe–green fruit contains anti nutrients to discourage premature consumption and again… the seeds are often toxic)
Alice, I’m sorry you weren’t pleased with this recipe. Assuming you didn’t omit or substitute any other ingredients, I imagine it’s due to your almond flour brand—although “cardboard” is hard to imagine unless maybe you left out the sugar? Almond flours are not all created equal and finely-sifted is definitely not the same as finely ground, which is why I specify. The recipe will work when made as directed, though, as will my other recipes!
I am a type 1 diabetic and my husband is a type 2. I have just finished battling 7 years of abdominal tumors that I had 25 lbs of tumors removed from my body. Because of the removal of these, my body has been going through some adjustments. I am dumping magnesium and iron, and the doctors don’t know why, plus I have become constipated with the high doses of iron that I have to take, but then I take high doses of magnesium that causes bouts where I need to be near a bathroom. Talking to a nutritionist and my doctors, a change in diet has been recommended. They both brought up a modified Paleo or Keto diet. My nutritionist wants me to eat there foods for sure everyday, pearl barley cooked in bone broth (homemade of course), greens ( cooked kale, collards, turnips, mustards, etc) and fish. The barley is to help with fiber and magnesium, and the greens for fiber and magnesium and iron. Will adding a cup of cooked barley make a bad difference in either of these diets, or will that amount everyday throw off all good effects of this diet? I am so tired of taking synthetic solutions for my problem. I am on excellent pre and pro-biotics and have seen great results from those. But getting this diet thing straightened out to help with my dumping of essential minerals is driving me coo-koo!

I am a 41 year old woman who has been healthy my whole life but was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism, sjogrens syndrome and more frighteningly, relapsing polychondritis. That is an autoimmune disease where the body destroys it’s cartilage. It is rheumatic, aggressive and there is no cure. Making these…again!! This time I added shredded coconut. I waited until the cookies were on the sheet and pressed in about 3 cranberries and 3 chocolate chips each per cookie just to make sure they were a little lighter on the chocolate as I keep making these repeatedly for my 2 year old. Sneaky! Also my batter looked a tiny bit on the wet side so I just sprinkled in a few spoonfuls of coconut flour to get them to be the right consistency. Sometimes you just have to tweak any recipe on any given time to make it right.
The 2nd batch I made straight after, I made them flatter/wider so they hopefully harden better once cooled… They look a bit more promising, and this time I got 8 cookies where as the first batch only made 7 and 1 tiny little baby one hehe. Oh I forgot to mention, I didn’t have any chocolate on hand, so instead I added 2 tsp of cocoa powder to make them chocolate!!! YUM!!

These are very good and very flexible. The first time I made them, they came out flat and browned at the bottom and were delicious that way! Determined to make them as illustrated here, I tried again. I cut the honey to 1tbs (both times, I left out the almond milk) and adjusted the amount of almonds to get a thicker dough. This time, they stayed round and were crunchy throughout (I blame my thin cookie sheet). The first flat batch was better and I will make them that way again.

I know! The ability to process dairy IS something that humans have adapted to! That’s lactose tolerance vs. intolerance. I am a lactose tolerant person, which by definition means that I still produce the enzyme lactase despite being over the age of 3, and I’m therefore able to process milk. Lactose tolerance is an example of the fact that humans are still evolving. It is a trait that has developed in Africa and Europe over the last few thousand years. It is a trait that has become more and more widespread due to the fact that it benefited our ancestors, and still benefits us, to be able to draw nutrients from yet another source.
Hi Maureen, the butter can be cold or room temp, I recommend cold if it is hot inside, as the butter will quickly soften. If your kitchen is cold you can let it soften a bit at room temp before creaming it with the sweetener. These cookies can be more flat or not as much depending on how big and mound like you make them when putting them on the baking sheet. I find using a cookie scoop helps with this & makes them more uniform. I hope this helps. Grain free cookies can be so finicky sometimes 😉
I made your cookies three times. The first time they turned out perfect. But ever since I put my almond flour in fridge, they have come out flat. I measured everything exactly how you recommended but I couldn’t fix the problem. Is it because I store my flour in fridge? I’ve made these numerous times now after a friend recommended them, and they are fantastic!! I wouldn’t say they’re a healthy substitute to normal/traditional chocolate chip cookies because they’re not quite the same. Rather, I’d say these are in a different category: much more moist, rich with hints of coconut that do not overpower the cookie, and an excellent satiation for the carb- and sugar-wary sweet tooth. Be sure to at least double the recipe because 12 cookies will NOT be enough!

Hello, a change in diet, eating lower amounts of carbs, and sugars can certainly help the mechanisms, also it should be noted that it is important a back be healthy as well, because the back being the sympathetic, and parasympathetic system controls these functions. So a massage just above the tail bone, as well as strengthening, and alignment can help. (A majority of misalignment, or inflammation is not felt) One should also not underestimate how our bodies are absorbing the foods we eat, and so it is important to use a digestive enzyme (not a cheap one) and a microprobiotic, to try and help balance the system better. I have enough information to write a book on this question alone, however, I hope the straightforwardness of the answer will help 🙂
The hypocritical nature of this diet is out of control. I get it, grains do make people fat. That’s why in a natural cycle they appear at the end of summer and let animals fatten up for the winter. But to rule out foods simply because our ancestors did not eat them is ridiculous. By this rule tomatoes, squash, peppers, avocados, quinoa, and let’s not forget COFFEE and CHOCOLATE were not around during the evolutionary period because they are all new world foods and humans did not make they’re way over here until much later (and anyone of European decent only the last couple hundred years). This is an Atkins diet, plain and simple, repackaged for the modern age. Don’t get me wrong- I totally believe it’s a better way of eating, but the pitch is just ridiculous.
