For instance, the fat allowance of the diet may be problematic. “My biggest hang-up with the paleo diet is all of the saturated fats it promotes with all of the meats,” explains Holley, noting that you could look for a locally sourced meat, whose origin and method of raising you're aware of, as a healthier option. Saturated fat from meat has been linked with an increased risk of early death. (9)
I think granola bars are pretty healthy so my kids and I eat them for snacks all the time. They aren’t just for breakfast anymore. These granola bars come together quickly and are so easy to make. Chopping the nuts is the most time-consuming part and you probably know that isn’t very hard. You can use whatever nuts you like or have on hand. You can forget the chocolate if you’d like.
If you want to get your chocolate craving satisfied with your snack time, these energy balls are the way to go. What we’re typically looking for when deciding on a snack is whether it will provide the fuel to get you to your next meal. With these you’ll be able to cruise to your next meal, and you won’t get those groggy or foggy times when you just want to eat and you can’t focus. You also won’t get that panicky feeling that occurs when you don’t know what your next meal is going to be. Have these energy balls and then you’ll be able to focus long enough to plan your next meal or take care of important work.
I’ve somehow managed to keep baking, and blogging, and photographing, and writing, through every year and step of college. In some ways, I think my college career would have been different if I hadn’t been committed to Bakerita. Bakerita is my totally my creative outlet, and without this outlet, and without being able to chat and connect with all of you…the past few years would’ve been pretty different. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJKiugjwKlw
I believe in parchment paper. It’s a DREAM for clean up and prevents burning. I hardly ever bake without it, and these ginger cookies are no exception. Some ginger cookies have a tendency to scorch on the bottom, and I’ve found that a light-colored baking sheet lined with parchment paper (or a silicone baking mat) is a fail proof plan for perfectly baked ginger cookies. (I think even Ina would approve.)
Beer is made from a trio of paleo offenders — wheat, barley, and hops — so it’s safe to say that’s off the menu. Organic wine is an alcoholic beverage that is considered paleo friendly in some circles, but because it goes through a process of fermenting sugar and starches, it’s not strict paleo if you’re living the way our prehistoric forebears did. Remember: Too much alcohol on a consistent basis has been associated with a higher risk of liver disease, heart disease, certain types of cancer, and brain health issues. (11)
Went from Depression, & severe fatigue, to vitality, more alert, focused, and wake up daily feeling “Happy”. Asked the Rheumatologist for the lowest dose, as I am very sensitive. Taking 1.5 mg. daily! A true MIRACLE! No Depression at all! It acts like an Opiate, but not an Opiate. Must get Prescription (Saw Rheumatologist, and compounded, so not covered by PPO Insurance Buy 90 Days worth, so more affordable).
I typically don’t comment on blogs, but now I feel compelled to! I literally make this recipe almost weekly, and everyone I know loves it so much! I’m asked to make it for get togethers, and even as gifts for people…this is the most incredible Paleo cookie recipe out there! THANK YOU SO MUCH you are one brilliant cook 😉 Keep posting recipes like this…please! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBuZM_RNfSA
Take 30 days and give it a shot – cut out the grains and dairy, start eating more vegetables and fruits, eat more humanely raised and non-grain fed meat, cut out the liquid calories and sugar, and see how you feel after the month is up. If you’re analytical and want numbers to use in your final verdict, get your blood work done at the beginning and end of the month.

Even if you’re not purely Paleo, boiled eggs should be a part of your diet for so many reasons. Not only are they super easy to cook (12 minutes on the stove on average with no mixing or stirring), but eggs are filled with proteins, vitamins, minerals, and good fats. Plus one large egg has only about 80 calories. Boiled eggs can even be found at the grocery store precooked and in packs of two, making it a great grab-and-go Paleo snack. If you’re not a fan of the hardboiled variety, try one of these egg-tastic breakfast cooking tips that we promise you’ll love. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2wGrYngpJ0
Archaeological research indicates that our Paleolithic ancestors gleaned the lion’s share of their calories and nutrition from meat, in stark comparison to modern day Western diets. Studies of today’s remaining hunter-gatherer societies show that meat and other animal products comprise a whopping 65% of their total caloric intake, whereas current day Western protein intakes average in at a measly 15% of total calories. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jm16Jr1Qtp8
Given the high volume of abdominal tumors and iron and magnesium malabsorption, have you been tested for Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative Colitis? Also the other reply mentioning the different forms of iron and magnesium is excellent advice. Most over the counter iron is not only hard on the digestive system, but also does not absorb well anyway. I believe there are three if not four different kinds. In regards to the barley not being ‘paleo’, does it really matter? If you are following a paleo diet for medical purposes and the barley aids and does not hinder your health, then THAT is part of YOUR diet, regardless of whether it’s proper paleo or not. I follow a mostly paleo diet, not as a fad, but because it’s what my gut prefers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrpA7FjV8w4

Dairy is a touchy subject. It’s widely considered a gray area in the Paleo community. Much of the world’s population cannot tolerate lactose, the sugar found in milk. Mass commercially-produced milk comes from industrially farmed cows, undesirable from both a health and ethical standpoint. That said, grass-fed and pasture-raised cows produce higher-quality milk. Fermented dairy, like yogurt and kefir, also offers the benefits of probiotics. If you choose to consume dairy, opt for the quality stuff. Otherwise, try additive-free nut and coconut milks.
Paleo Almond Butter Chocolate Chunk Cookies are the real deal! They’re definitely at the top of my list of favorite paleo treats. And by the looks of the empty container, they must be one of my hubby’s faves too! Apparently he thinks cookies for breakfast is a new thing at our house! Anywho, They’re a one bowl recipe and can be made from start to finish in less than 25 minutes. If you’ve follow The Real Food Dietitians blog for awhile now, you know that we’re all about keeping it simple. Whether that means less ingredients, quick preparation or fewer dirty dishes. We love easy recipes!

Thank you so much for this amazing recipe! My 5 year old son eats Paleo for medical reasons and he’s been going crazy for a cookie! I’ve made some other paleo sweets, none of which have been well received. He was so excited to help me make them and even more excited to help eat them! He ate 2 after they cooled and is already asking for another after dinner. My 7 year old, extremely picky daughter also loved them. Instead of butter we used organic coconut palm shortening and they came absolutely perfect! Thank you!
These tomatoes are filled with the irresistible taste of buffalo chicken. Even though chicken wings are easy to make on the Paleo diet, it’s still a good idea to even them out by eating a vegetable along with them. Here you can get the taste of buffalo wings but in bite size form, with no bones, and no need to supplement it because the tomato has you covered. Plus you’re getting all of the benefits that come from eating tomatoes, and this snack will hold you over for quite some time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUNe5SEqDw8
Remove the meat from the marinade and lay it out on your counter on top of some paper towels. The goal is to get it as dry as possible. Lay paper towel over top and pat it dry. Now’s the time to put it into your dehydrator or oven. You can thread the meat onto wooden skewers (near one end of each piece) and lay the skewers perpendicular to the oven wrack’s bars (use the top shelf). Make sure the meat hangs down. Place cooking sheets lined in foil beneath the meat to catch any drips.
Larabar is another bar made from simple ingredients but also higher in the sugar department. That’s because the sugar is the all-natural kind from dates. The other ingredients are just as simple: almonds, unsweetened apples, walnuts, raisins, and cinnamon—super clean and also incredibly tasty. We recommend these before a workout when your body needs more simple carbohydrates for quick energy.

I did notice if you let them sit they did appear to have that same “look” however I also realized they are a softer cookie. I had a handful of people try them and all but one could not tell they were not your “typical” chocolate chip cookie. If I wouldn’t have told the one they were grain free/dairy free they would have been on board with the rest. I am very pleased with this recipe and although I commented on the issues I had, I would make these again and again! I was looking for a perfect Paleo snack and I think I may have found it. Thank you! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VExW4SNt3Ko
Recommended fruit intakes can vary from individual to individual. That being said, fruit can often be quite rich in fructose and in excess quantities has the potential to be harmful. You may want to consider eating sweet potatoes as a carb source and or increasing your fat intake in proportion to your fruit intake. Ultimately it comes down to how you feel, and if you are exercising regularly you might have a metabolism that can handle the higher fruit intake. Good Luck!
I’ve always hated “fad” diets because any intelligent person should know elimination of an entire nutrient is dumb. I have bated around the idea of Paleo for a while and the more I read and think about it, and it does make the most sense. I am going to start working towards a more pure Paleo diet by cutting out the bread and pasta. I’m not committed to giving up coffee or tea, something not really addressed here. I mean you said do in steps right? We don’t want the caffeine withdrawals with the carb withdrawals. In my case I might loose my mind completely. So how do those beverages fit into this idea of eating Paleo?
wow! i made a couple of your no grain cookie recipes before but this one takes the cake, er, cookie! this time, however, i opted for 1 1/2 cups almond meal with 1/2 cup buckwheat flour. i needed to add about 1/3 cup water to make the dough come together. along with vegan choc chips, i threw in some walnuts and ate three cookies before they were completely cool! since my dough only make 12 cookies, i will probably eat them all in a day. : )
Yes I’m superstitious and so far I did the same thing to my body this time that I did last year. I never had issues training or running halfs so I’m seriously considering my reasons to marathon… I think if it were just me I’d run halfs. So that tells me I’m letting outside pressure get to me for no reason. I’d rather run forever then hang up my laces. Sorry rant over but I’m really happy to make these powerful discoveries:)
Making these…again!! This time I added shredded coconut. I waited until the cookies were on the sheet and pressed in about 3 cranberries and 3 chocolate chips each per cookie just to make sure they were a little lighter on the chocolate as I keep making these repeatedly for my 2 year old. Sneaky! Also my batter looked a tiny bit on the wet side so I just sprinkled in a few spoonfuls of coconut flour to get them to be the right consistency. Sometimes you just have to tweak any recipe on any given time to make it right.
I’m sure I’m missing about a million other prepared snack options but I’m going to leave ya’ with my top 15 here. I know there’s also a ton of chocolate bars, treats, snacks, etc. but I’m not including those as I personally choose to not eat straight up chocolate as a snack anymore. I have way too many old food habits to jump on that train ;). If you have any other suggestions, favorites or things I’m missing, leave me a comment and let me know what to add!
These can help you avoid the sort of pre-packaged snacks you find in stores that claim to be “made from real fruit” only to find that there are several other ingredients that rank higher on the ingredient list. Skip out on all of that added sugar, fructose, and even partially hydrogenated oils by making your own fruit snacks so you can do quality control. These are made with just 3 ingredients and they are using both raspberries and strawberries so the antioxidant level is through the roof. Gelatin is used to make them feel like a store bought fruit snack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maSjPJb4rbQ
In a large bowl, place the almond flour, coconut flour, salt and baking soda, and whisk to combine well. Add the palm sugar, and whisk again to combine, working out any lumps in the sugar. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients, and add the coconut oil, eggs and vanilla, mixing to combine after each addition. Add the chocolate chips tossed in coconut flour to the cookie dough, and mix to combine. The dough will be quite soft.
Unlike many traditional stuffed pepper recipes, these stuffed bell peppers are stuffed with things you might actually eat while watching the big game. Basically it entails mixing up a batch of buffalo chicken salad, complete with chicken, hot sauce, and bleu cheese, and then stuffing them into a pepper. This means you’ll be getting a nice balance of vegetables and meat, as well as that classic buffalo flavor with the hot sauce and bleu cheese. Plenty of protein in this snack that eats like a meal if you need it to. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIWMOrBumSk
The fact that vegetable oils are still so prevalent in today’s world is a testament to just how aggressively they’ve been marketed, lobbied, and subsidized. But just because everyone else is using them doesn’t mean you should, and you most definitely shouldn’t if you’re planning on going full paleo (or Primal). The following oils are typically ultra-processed and pro-inflammatory on account of their high levels of omega-6 fatty acids. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDs5M-i4GOA
It’s a great plan to have an emergency Paleo kit in your desk at work. This way whether your caught sort, or don’t have time for lunch, you always have a fast Paleo snack at your fingertips. If you’re buying pre packages tins and packets, make sure you check the ingredients and get the best quality available. These options should store and keep well for a while in your desk; perfect for an emergency stash! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKzqFQA9NTc
