Some aspects of this diet sound good and logical but, How does anyone know that prehistoric homosapiens were at all “healthy”? Maybe the life span of Cro magnon was so short because of poor diet and extreme physical labor. Has anyone seen long term proof of such a basic intake? Don’t misunderstand me, I think the chemistry we’ve developed and added to our foods can’t be good but, I can’t help wonder if finding a balance in what we eat is better than eliminating foods that we can process and use. Broken down to a basic form of existence, all life has the same properties of nutrition and survival of the species. Whether it’s milk from a coconut or milk from a goat, it has the same purpose, just a different presentation. I think this diet is a good start to eating less processed foods, which to me seems more important than eliminating milk from a different animal than ourselves. Maybe the unnatural way we produce milk from cows has more to do with lactose intolerance than the essence of that product. Maybe genetic modifications of grains have led to gluten intolerance. The life span of humans has certainly increased. Maybe not treating our food with growth enhancement or pesticides would be the answer to allowing us to consume some foods that are emerging as not inherently good for us. Just a few ideas to ponder. I’m going for another cup of organic coffee. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyiCfNSG1_A
It is TOTALLY the weather’s fault! Same kind here in Quebec city and I have suddenly been wanting to sleep and bake (but mostly eat!) cookies, muffins and pies all week! I miraculously managed not to until I came across your article and recipe. I like things simple and those cookies sure are. I just ate three and they are very good but… they came out of the oven super flat. One large crepe of paleo cookies. :) Still yummy, but less pretty. Any idea what went wrong?

Like land animals, sea animals serve as a healthy source of protein as well as a variety of micronutrients. Many fish offer a solid dose of omega-3 fatty acids (to be consumed in moderation and balanced with omega-6 fatty acids) and essential vitamins and nutrients. Be sure to purchase seafood that’s sustainably sourced and try to avoid fish heavily exposed to environmental toxins.

Of course, snacking is completely optional on a Paleo diet. In fact, many people end up naturally eating only two meals per day, but it doesn’t mean that snacking is a bad idea, especially if the snack only contains healthy ingredients and prevents you from indulging with bad foods. They can also be great when on the go or as something to eat post workout. Just remember that your snacks should respect the basic principles of Paleo. This means that most fruits and nuts should be consumed only in moderation. Most fruits are high in the sugar fructose, which is toxic in higher doses and most nuts are high in polyunsaturated fat (PUFA), especially the omega-6 PUFA. Refer to my article on nuts and seeds to know about the best choices. This also means that snacks containing mainly saturated fat or animal protein are usually great.
Recommended fruit intakes can vary from individual to individual. That being said, fruit can often be quite rich in fructose and in excess quantities has the potential to be harmful. You may want to consider eating sweet potatoes as a carb source and or increasing your fat intake in proportion to your fruit intake. Ultimately it comes down to how you feel, and if you are exercising regularly you might have a metabolism that can handle the higher fruit intake. Good Luck!
I just made these cookies, and like several other people, I ended up with flat pancakes–very oily. I could tell based on your description of scooping the batter and pressing down to form half circles and then tapping the batter out, etc., that the consistency was wrong even before I baked them. Much too sticky and moist to shape the batter at all. Is that 3 tablespoons of coconut oil correct? The only change I made was rice milk for almond milk. The taste is okay, but again, very oily. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-VRe3Xkvzo
it is rediculous that a “paloe” diet allows stevia, baked goods, Coconut flour , other flowers but claims that grains wouldnt have been ground….so seeds but not grain flowers????? sure…cutting out unhealthy gluten enriched and chemically affected wheat not good for any, processd foods never good but to encourage increased animal protein consumption is just irresponsible https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PsxZ6jsALk
While typically considered health foods (who’s ever been angry with a bag of lentils?), legumes have a major downside: phytic acid. According to Paleo Leap, “Phytic acid binds to nutrients in the food, preventing you from absorbing them.” While phytic acid is present in a number of Paleo-friendly foods (like nuts), these foods are generally consumed in smaller quantities. Legumes, however, constitute a staple in many diets around the world, leading to overexposure to phytic acid as well as a host of other antinutrients.
Protein is one of the staple sources of energy on the paleo diet. In fact, it’s likely that meat was the first food that our ancestors ate and, as such, our bodies are primed to run well on it. With a high protein content, moderate to high fat content, low or no carbs and a range of vitamins and minerals to boot, eating plenty of meat is a great way to gain or maintain lean muscle mass, boost your metabolism and make sure that you stay full between meals.
These gummy snacks are billed as being anti-inflammatory and use a host of ingredients that have been shown to help curb inflammation in the body, namely turmeric and ginger. The way they’ve made these into gummy form is through the use of gelatin, which is definitely a go on Paleo. There’s also other healthy items to really make these a vitamin-packed snack, including citrus juice of your choice and raw honey. By using natural ingredients like raw honey you’re eating food that is as close to nature as possible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLoukoBs8TE

I am on a paleo food closed group on FB and while its been great recently they have been posting recipes that use cassava and tapioca flour. When I tell them that’s not paleo, I get shot down by others saying that its allowed, or others who are AIP, use it all the time and that its paleo. I have directed them to Dr. Cordain’s website to point out that those items are not on the paleo diet but its caused a bit of a flame war on there now. Any help would be appreciated. also as a type 2 diabetic who is hyperglycemic I have been on the paleo diet for 2 months. I have lost 17 lbs and my blood sugar has gone down from a fasting level of 277 to a normal waking level of 135-150. I can’t have any fruits since anything causes sugar spike that lasts for almost the whole day and no sweet potatoes, which sucks majorly either way. So its veggies and meat primarily. Any suggestions to not get into a funk or boredom with food day in and out?? thank you for your time in reading my reply.
There’s evidence that our ancestors pressed olives to make antioxidant-rich olive oil as far back as 7,000 years ago. Therefore, olive oil is considered to be a paleo ingredient and rightly so as it’s exceptional nutritional profile provides us with numerous benefits. With a unique mix of oleic acid and monounsaturated fatty acids, using olive oil raw or in low-heat cooking applications has been shown to decrease the risk of developing cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s.
Hello Gina! Just wanted to let you know that last night my friend had a cookie baking contest and I made your Paleo Chocolate Chunk cookie. Keep in note it was my first time ever baking a cookie, let alone it being a special kind of cookie, being Paleo and all. But, the cookies came in 2nd place in the competition. I was proud of my accomplishment. Thank you for sharing your wonderful recipe. They are very delicious cookies!!
I know! The ability to process dairy IS something that humans have adapted to! That’s lactose tolerance vs. intolerance. I am a lactose tolerant person, which by definition means that I still produce the enzyme lactase despite being over the age of 3, and I’m therefore able to process milk. Lactose tolerance is an example of the fact that humans are still evolving. It is a trait that has developed in Africa and Europe over the last few thousand years. It is a trait that has become more and more widespread due to the fact that it benefited our ancestors, and still benefits us, to be able to draw nutrients from yet another source.
Fruit snacks and roll-ups (i.e. fruit leather), often packed as additions to a child’s lunch box or provided as an afternoon snack, can be anything but a fruit-based snack.  Often packed with simple sugars and void of dietary fiber, fruit snacks may not seem like a healthy snack to incorporate as part of a Paleo diet, but it is easy to cut out excess sugar when you make your own fruit snacks or roll-ups from scratch.  These “real” and natural fruit-based goodies make a delicious sweet snack when you are craving sugar.  Great to have on hand for both yourself and children, take a peek at these tasty recipes that may soon become a staple in your Paleo pantry:
But critics argue that the unlimited amount of red meat the paleo diet allows may have an adverse effect on heart health in people with diabetes, as research links eating red meat in excess to poor heart health. (11)  If you have diabetes and don’t moderate your red-meat intake, this could be a big problem, as people with diabetes are 2 times as likely to die of heart disease as people who do not have diabetes. Even if you’re not purely Paleo, boiled eggs should be a part of your diet for so many reasons. Not only are they super easy to cook (12 minutes on the stove on average with no mixing or stirring), but eggs are filled with proteins, vitamins, minerals, and good fats. Plus one large egg has only about 80 calories. Boiled eggs can even be found at the grocery store precooked and in packs of two, making it a great grab-and-go Paleo snack. If you’re not a fan of the hardboiled variety, try one of these egg-tastic breakfast cooking tips that we promise you’ll love.

Vegetable oils aren’t really made from vegetables, which is why we’re still really confused how they came upon that name. They are usually made from junk oils that really aren’t fit for human consumption. These oils are very high in omega-6 fatty acids, which promote inflammation (as opposed to omega-3 fatty acids which are anti-inflammatory). They are debatably one of the major causes of heart disease, and are basically junk oils. While saturated fat remains demonized by mainstream nutrition, it really isn’t the culprit in poor health. These omega-6, junky oils are far more devastating for long-term health. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6RGTb3Yki0
Sure, there's a bit of debate as to whether true Paleo-ers can have foods like chocolate (which is made with milk solids and sugar). As articulated on Paleo Leap, an online resource for all things Paleo, "In the true sense of whether our Paleolithic ancestors enjoyed [foods like chocolate], the answer is almost always no, but the real question we should ask ourselves is whether they are healthy when consumed in moderation." In essence, it's up to the individual to decide whether or not to include chocolate in their nutritional regime. Paleo-ers who do say yes to chocolate often choose the dark variety -- it tends to be less processed and lower in sugar.
Now, there are lots of people who feel iffy about snacking. And I get that. The snacks many of us were brought up and traditionally reach for (animal crackers, pretzels, cheese flavored crackers) are kind of just filling up the belly instead of actually feeding the body what it is actually asking for...which is nutrients and protein! Since moving our family to a mostly-Paleo way of eating a few years ago, our snacking game has totally changed!  Out with the starchy crackers. In with real food, nutrient dense nibbles! Nibbles that a little growing body will actually put to good use! That will actually keep them going until their next meal....with their sanity (and your's) intact.
Here’s a great game day dip that you can serve up and feel like you’re having a real treat. Use one of the chip recipes on this page to scoop up this flavorful dip. It’s a sure winner when bacon and bleu cheese join spinach and artichokes. It’s like taken a proven success and adding two more delicious ingredients to it. You may want to drop the bleu cheese if you know for certain that you can’t handle any cheese, but many Paleo eaters will make an exception for a bit of cheese on occasion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0CG_84_7s8
These can help you avoid the sort of pre-packaged snacks you find in stores that claim to be “made from real fruit” only to find that there are several other ingredients that rank higher on the ingredient list. Skip out on all of that added sugar, fructose, and even partially hydrogenated oils by making your own fruit snacks so you can do quality control. These are made with just 3 ingredients and they are using both raspberries and strawberries so the antioxidant level is through the roof. Gelatin is used to make them feel like a store bought fruit snack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maSjPJb4rbQ

Roll the dough into 8 (75-gram) balls and place the remaining 1/4 cup (43 grams) of chocolate chips on the top and on the sides of the dough balls. You can also roll them into 16 smaller balls but then you need to adjust the baking time (a few minutes less than recommended below). Place 4" apart on the prepared baking sheet. Press the cookies down lightly with the palm of your hand.
I just want to say that these are, by far, the best paleo chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had. In fact, these may be the best chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever had period! And they were so easy! I followed the recipe to a “T” except I added crushed pecan halves to the mix and had to use coconut nectar because I was out of raw honey. Thanks so much for the recipe!
One part of the Paleo dieting philosophy is to not feel like foods are forbidden, but rather to cut them out because they’re not good for you. This means that all of the pre-packaged snack foods for sale should be trumped by snacks you make for yourself out of natural foods. Luckily Paleo-inspired cooks and chefs have been hard at work coming up with delicious and interesting ways to get your snack on, so enjoy!

I’m sorry to hear these didn’t work out for you. I’m not sure what you mean by “the flour never became anything but crumbled powder.” Were you making your own almond flour, and the ground almonds didn’t become fluffy enough? Or do you mean that there wasn’t enough moisture for the cookies to hold together? I’ve made these cookies many times, and this ratio of maple syrup and coconut oil (or butter) has always produced a delicious result. You can always add additional coconut oil or maple syrup if the cookie dough doesn’t look like it will hold together. I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas, regardless!

With grains excluded from the Paleo diet, nuts and seeds are popular replacements in Paleo versions of bread, cereals, pies, cakes and other baked goods. They form the basis of many dairy-free milks, flours and nut butters. They’re also incredibly popular and sustaining snacks and salad toppings. While nuts open up a range of previously non-Paleo offerings, they’re nevertheless high in calories and undesirable phytic acid. Consume them mindfully.

When people hear the word diet, they often think of all the yummy foods they undoubtedly have to give up. But Go Raw is the exception. Founded on the principle of a raw-based diet, Go Raw offers organic and vegan snacks that taste good, like their Paleo cookies that come in unique flavors, including ginger snap and lemon pie. While these may not be your warm, gooey homemade chocolate chip cookies, they definitely satisfy a sweet tooth.

I just made these not even 20 minutes ago and they were DELICIOUS. It’s the first time I have ever baked paleo cookies and they came out great. I had to bake them a little longer because instead of putting them on parchment I put them in mini cupcake tins to make them into little portable bite sized snacks I added unsweetened coconut flakes to it because I love coconut flakes. All in all, great and super easy recipe!

Alcohol can pump up people but not by being a stimulant. It progressively disconnects the inhibition part of the brain and the short-term memory part, and this leads to disinhibition which FEELS like stimulation.  It leads to decreased memory of your day when you drink after work.  The depressive aspect and fractured sleep lasts for days or weeks in one’s brain tissue, depending on the unit dose and frequency of dosing.  These side effects temporarily overwhelm the liver.  Drinking faster than the liver can filter is the effect people are SEEKING WHEEEE ! The body can adjust somewhat so it is harder to kill it, like tolerating starvation or sugar spikes or cardio without weight change.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwQgjq0mCdE
These skittles are made totally with fruit or vegetables and coconut butter. It’s the combination of the fruits and veggies that make them so good. The recipes for all 7 different flavors are included. The ingredients listed above for maroon consist of all the ingredients. The other colors only have the ingredients listed that are not included in the maroon variety. All you need is a good blender and a food dehydrator. Although I have dried fruits in the oven before. The oven is faster but necessarily better. Just turn it on the lowest heat possible. I put links to two different dehydrators because one is way more affordable than the other. I have the cheap one and it works fine. But if you think you might use it a lot it might be worth the investment to get the more expensive one. Since the skittles are dried they can be stored at room temperature for a long time. That makes them handy to keep in your purse or bag for a time. I’ve also been known to freeze. dried foods and they keep just fine for a really long time.
This snack has Paleo written all over it. It has just the essential ingredients needed for a fried almond snack, and they’ve made this incredibly simple to follow. Almonds are one of the healthiest nuts you can eat, but sometimes they can get a little boring. By frying them you immediately improve the taste, and since they have you frying them in a Paleo approved oil you will be staying on the Paleo path. Rosemary is an herb that really goes nicely with almonds, but the ghee steals the show in terms of taste, giving the almonds a nice buttery flavor.

Healthy granola is hard to find because most supermarket options are loaded with sugars and unnatural additives, not to mention grains and oats that make them Paleo-unfriendly. Unlike your typical granola, Purely Elizabeth is grain- and oat-free, plus it’s low-sugar. The low-carb granola clusters are perfect for the Paleo diet because they’re high in protein, thanks to cashews, dried coconut flakes, seeds, and cashew butter. The grain-free granola comes in two different flavors—banana nut butter and coconut cashew.
Much better than expected! I had to use honey instead of maple syrup (I was out)… And I wasn’t sure they were going to turn out well – the batter was super crumbly, so I added 2 more tbsp of coconut oil and then using a cookie scoop, I mashed the batter into it to make rounded balls. The ones I mashed in like that didn’t crumble when they came out of the oven – they stuck together well.
thank you for your personal accusations. Why would you call me a nutcase? why would you feel it necessary to put down my child? You really hurt my feelings with your reply. I’m so sorry I ever posted my reply to the person who created this website, and seem to have attracted personal accusations from her readers. You don’t know my child, or me or my family or how we raise her. I wish you well and hope that you somehow feel better by writing what you did. I did not feel better when i wrote my comments originally and wish I had never written them. Thank you for reminding me of that.
Obesity, heart disease, and diabetes: These are just a few of the health conditions that proponents of the Paleolithic diet, or caveman diet, blame on our sedentary lifestyles and modern diets, which are loaded with sugar, fat, and processed foods. Their proposed solution? Cut modern foods from our diet and return to the way our early hunter-gatherer ancestors ate.
Dairy should mainly be avoided, especially if you suffer from gut problems and gluten intolerances, but if you’re in good health and have no sensitivities to lactose (sugars in milk) or casein (protein in milk) then a little healthy dairy can go a long way. Avoid cow’s milk as it has a high Glycemic Index unlike cheese or yogurt. Better options are goat’s and sheep’s milk products, A2 cow’s milk and cow’s milk fermented products like kefir, unsweetened yogurt, aged cheeses,  full fat cream, butter, and ricotta.
Hi Lynn, It’s not a silly question at all! And your right, I did cut up parchment paper into cookie size squares and would stack the squares between each cookie. The white parchment paper makes them show up better in photos, since they are all the same color. A Paleo wedding should be fun and challenging for the food. I’m thrilled the cookies will be in on it.
I think granola bars are pretty healthy so my kids and I eat them for snacks all the time. They aren’t just for breakfast anymore. These granola bars come together quickly and are so easy to make. Chopping the nuts is the most time-consuming part and you probably know that isn’t very hard. You can use whatever nuts you like or have on hand. You can forget the chocolate if you’d like.

Next add in almond flour, coconut flour and baking soda, mixing well to combine and form a dough. Fold in dark chocolate chunks. You may need to use your hands to moisten the dough so that it sticks together well.
The paleo diet eliminates dairy because its advocates say many people are lactose intolerant, and because eating dairy has been associated with Crohn’s disease, among other claims. (4) While you wouldn’t want to eat lactose (a sugar found in dairy) if your body can’t tolerate it, there’s no proof that eating dairy causes Crohn’s or worsens symptoms in those who have been diagnosed. (5)
Hey Gabrielle.. the whole world is confusing when it comes to people telling us what’s right/ what’s not right and what’s healthy/ what’s not healthy. Your better off basing your diet on how your body feels after eating something (tired, bloated, sinus problems, how you feel emotionally, great or satisfied etc) Your body tells you awesome stuff about the things you eat if you pay attention to it.

Get yourself a top round roast and slice it as thinly as you can (or get your butcher to do it). The best jerky is made with just a few ingredients (but everyone’s taste buds are different). You’ll want to combine coconut aminos, some spices, and coconut sugar (yes, it isn’t totally Paleo; you can use honey instead). If you want the flavor that liquid smoke imparts, feel free to add it in. Put all the ingredients into a bowl, throw in the meat, stir it around, cover it, and put it in your fridge for at least 12 hours.

Oils are trickier. Loren Cordain, Ph.D., founder of The Paleo Diet Movement, breaks down which oils are healthy on the paleo diet: olive, walnut, flaxseed, macadamia, avocado and coconut oils are all allowed because they were gathered directly from the plant. While our hunter-gatherer ancestors probably did not consume flaxseed oil, it is allowed because of its content of high alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a type of heart-healthy, anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zq0Ix-Vfoww
YUMMY! I am new to the paleo lifestyle. I have been trying new recipes out on the family. They all love this. I doubled this recipe. I only cooked seven cookies because the batter is so good. My husband said he would easy these paleo chocolate chip cookies over regular chocolate chip cookies any day. I also ate a small amount of batter, maybe a little more than that, but I’m so full. I love how it satisfies my craving and my hunger. Headed to a family dinner full and not craving a refined sugar dessert. Thank you for sharing! I’ll send some sunshine your way.
The China Study is frequently cited when criticizing the Paleo Diet – focusing on a vegetarian diet and consuming rice is healthier than the Paleo Diet. I respectfully disagree with that nutritional philosophy and strongly disagree with the conclusions drawn from that book [7], and will leave you to make your own conclusions based on your own self-experimentation.
These cashew butter balls are made raw so you don’t have to bake them. They’re ready to eat after just an hour in the fridge. The good thing is that you can make many of them at once, and just eat them a bit at a time as you go through your week. Having snacks made ahead of time is really helpful when you’re trying to stick to any diet plan. These are so simple to make it’s just dates, cashews and cashew butter. Roll it into a ball and cool it off and they’re ready to nosh.
Because this diet plan relies heavily on meat you’ll be getting a fair amount of protein to feed your muscles. This helps to promote a leaner physique, and can even help with muscle growth if you engage in weightlifting while on it. When you consider the physique of Stone Age man they didn’t really have a lot of excess baggage in the form of a lot of fat and underdeveloped muscles. They were lean, mean, sabretooth tiger battling machines, and this sort of efficient physique still helps out in our modern world. With a leaner body structure you’ll be able to better handle life’s challenges, including the stresses that occur with a busy 21st century lifestyle.

If you’re a big fan of chips, you’ll be happy to know that you don’t have to give them up when following the Paleo diet.  While you may not be able to incorporate your favorite brands from childhood or run by the convenience store for a quick snack bag, fruit and veggie chips are a much healthier and lighter alternative.  Although you can find pricey bags of these types of chips at most grocery stores today, the ingredient list can be questionable.  Compared to the equivalent, make-at-home fruit and veggie chips will provide your body with energizing nutrients.  Here are some recipes for chips that you can feel good about eating:

I am a 41 year old woman who has been healthy my whole life but was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism, sjogrens syndrome and more frighteningly, relapsing polychondritis. That is an autoimmune disease where the body destroys it’s cartilage. It is rheumatic, aggressive and there is no cure. Eyes, ears, nose, heart valves, kidneys, spine, entire tracheobronchial tree are affected. It is normally fatal when the airways collapse. Of course im on humira, after 6 other medications failed to bring relief from the chronic extreme inflammation. My hair is falling out at an alarming rate. I began researching paleo and autoimmune disease and realized I could reverse every bit of this and send these diseases into remission by getting off the grains and carbs and dairy. And GLUTEN. Its all a bit overwhelming but I bought a cookbook and have been reading here a lot and for the first time in years, my pain is a 2 out of 10 after 2 weeks of cutting gluten and dairy and sugar. Ive literally eaten nothing but lean protein and low glycemic fruits and veggies. Also a lot of eggs and lots of water. I know it has taken many years to get in the wretched shape I am in with autoimmune disease and I can’t reverse it overnight but it is now my mission. My husband and kids are feeling better already as well. Cant wait to ditch the humira and steroids. Thank you!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xs9JZayv4xA
